There weren’t many options left, so I decided to do four years in the military. Besides I was interested in travelling, seeing some of the world or at least more of the United States. Ethan therefore left school and joined the US Marines. He laughed as he told me of how he was tricked into entering the Marines and his subsequent shock at entering this very tough macho world. I wanted to take a trade that insured that I got something out of the military so I first went to take the test with the air force, not with the marines.

I have got a lot of belief in what I do and my entire career has been spent in various bits of the voluntary sector with charitable aims and objectives, if you like, but done in a businesslike framework. I am in a relatively privileged position; I have had a reasonably good education. I have been able to earn a decent salary and have a nice house and all of that and, it sounds very trite, but it is a bit about putting something back really and trying to support other people who are less privileged than me, particularly people who are disabled.

My mother was a convert and so she was more of a Catholic than an ordinary one, the converts are the worst. Now they were very very strict with my older brothers and sisters. I felt that they were just as strict with me but I think when my father got older, he relaxed a bit. So I probably did get more of his attention than the others and perhaps they resented that, I don’t know. I suppose the only other thing [about her childhood] happened when I was fifteen. We had been brought up as Catholics and after my father died that continued.
