Do not allow participants to complete a task through to the end with no time constraint (if someone has sufficient time they can easily avoid errors). An important point here is to avoid ceiling and floor effects. A ceiling effect occurs when hardly anyone makes an error (performance “hits the ceiling”). A floor effect occurs when hardly anyone gets anything correct. Your tasks should be “discriminating”, in that you need a good spread of scores, with few participants making zero errors or having zero correct.

Ethical guidelines Having decided on a topic to investigate, having sketched a rough idea of the method and realised that the study is feasible, thus far, one of the first questions you will need to ask yourself is: What are the ethical issues I need to consider? Ethical issues in psychology came to the fore following a number of very famous studies. In one, Milgram (1965) asked, then coerced, participants to give someone a number of electric shocks of everincreasing intensity (from a “Mild Shock” to “Danger: Extremely High Voltage”).

For example, it may be the number of items correctly recalled from a list of words shown previously. The experiment is set up so that the effects of the independent variable can be seen on the dependent variable. More precisely, if an effect is present, then there should be differences in the dependent variable between participants who differ on the independent variable. For example, there may be differences in the number of words recalled between participants given the opportunity to rehearse a list of words and those not given the chance to rehearse the items.
